Once upon a moment of mischief and opportunity, some Cornell College students dared to dream. “Give the power of publishing back to the writers, and artists!” they said. “Give those who dare brave the rough waters of presenting their creations the power to present!”
BOOM, inspired by short-lived literary magazines like FIRE!!, from the Harlem renaissance, and BLAST, from the Vorticism modernist movement in England, aims to give that power of publishing back to Cornell College authors, photographers, and artists courageous enough to share their work with the student body.
Each block, BOOM releases a new themed issue. That theme could creatively and critically tackle affairs like rape, free-speech, drugs, or even science-fiction vs. science-fact, in new expressions. But we also theme our issues around topics like nature-writing, creative non-fiction, and ugly poetry. We don’t judge how our submissions manifest each theme. Whether in the form of creative writing, critical essay, photography, or artwork, BOOM accepts all forms of expression. We welcome original ideas, and love having our eyes opened.
While being published in the physical magazine is a selective process (limited only by available space; if we could, we would publish everyone’s work!), on our website, we release a digital BOOM every block to coincide with the release of our paper magazine. No matter what, when you submit to BOOM, you will see your work in the BOOM canon, alongside your peers' submissions as well.
So what are you waiting for? Hopefully just for your browser to load our submissions page. If that’s not the case, dig into your journals and sift through your hard-drives. Submit your work. We can’t wait to publish it!
